The deadline that arrives before the wire

The Problem

EU Regulation 2023/1804 requires container and passenger ships calling at core ports to run on shore power from 2030. By mid-2025 only 20 per cent of the required connections were installed or contracted, and just 11 per cent at container terminals (TT Club). The loads are large and lumpy: a cruise ship at berth can draw 16 MW and a container ship 7.5 MW, against a typical quay crane demand of 1 to 2 MW. Most harbour connections were never sized for it, and reinforcement joins the same 5-to-15-year grid queue as everything else. Ports also treat lithium batteries as restricted cargo: in July 2026 an Australian port announced it had become the first in its state approved to stage grid-scale batteries at all. The obligation date is fixed; the reinforcement date is not.

What We Do

Storage on the harbour side charges from the existing connection through quiet hours and dispenses through berth peaks, so the port meets the regulator's date rather than the grid operator's. We are the energy layer: berth-level and crane-level duty, cycling deeply every day for the life of a fifty-year piece of infrastructure, paired with high-rate capability where a specific berth profile demands it. The Aqueous Metal Cell is designed for 30,000 cycles and 30 years with no scheduled augmentation, and its aqueous, non-flammable chemistry carries zero risk of fire from thermal runaway, which is a different conversation with the harbour master, the dangerous-goods regime and the insurer than the one they are having today.

What Changes for the Operator

Shore power live on the compliance date. A smaller reinforcement bill. An asset that keeps earning on peak management after the wire finally lands. And storage the port's own safety rules do not fight.
