When Energy Storage Safety Becomes a Deciding Factor

Interview

Henning Rath

In wildfire-prone communities, the lowest upfront cost isn't always the smartest long-term investment. EnerVenue CEO Henning Rath explains why.

What does energy storage really cost when the consequences of failure extend beyond the project itself?

For communities in areas exposed to wildfires, the answer goes well beyond the initial price tag.

During a recent conversation with a First Nation community on Canada's northwest coast, EnerVenue CEO Henning Rath encountered a concern that is increasingly important in energy infrastructure decisions: why accept additional battery fire risk to save money upfront?

The community was evaluating energy storage in an area already facing significant wildfire exposure. Safety, long-term reliability and the potential consequences of an incident were central to the discussion.

That led to a different way of looking at the investment.

Rather than focusing exclusively on capital expenditure (CapEx), Henning suggested evaluating the project through its levelized cost of storage (LCOS), which considers the cost of delivering stored energy over the asset's operating life.

It's a distinction that matters.

A lower purchase price does not necessarily mean lower long-term costs. Degradation, maintenance, augmentation and operational risks all influence the economics of an energy storage project.

EnerVenue's Aqueous Metal Cell (AMC) technology is designed with these considerations in mind. With zero risk of fire from thermal runaway and a focus on long-term endurance, it offers an approach to energy storage built around safety and lifecycle value.

For communities, utilities and infrastructure developers, this creates an opportunity to evaluate projects against what matters most: reliable energy, manageable risk and economics that make sense over time.

As Henning explains, approaching these challenges differently can open markets where conventional energy storage solutions face barriers to adoption.
