Why We're Building in Public: The One-Month Countdown to HVML

Over the past few months, we have been sharing regular updates from our new manufacturing line in Changzhou. If you have followed EnerVenue or watched Henning’s videos from the factory, you will have seen the line at different stages of construction: machines arriving, equipment being installed and commissioned, and engineers working through problems as the operation gradually takes shape.

We are now less than a month away from opening our High Volume Manufacturing Line. It is a useful moment to look at why we chose to show the work before the factory was finished, rather than waiting until opening day.

Trust takes evidence

Industrial technology comes with big claims. Customers are being asked to make decisions about equipment that may become part of their infrastructure for years or decades, so they have every reason to look beyond presentations and specifications.

At EnerVenue, we believe energy storage should be built as infrastructure, with endurance, safety, operational simplicity and lifecycle economics considered from the beginning. For customers, that belief ultimately has to be supported by what we build and deliver.

We have been sharing the development of our manufacturing capability while the work is still underway, giving people a clearer view of what scaling production actually involves and how the line is progressing.

Showing a factory while it is still a factory

Anyone who has worked in manufacturing knows that getting to high-volume production involves a lot of unglamorous work. Processes have to be designed and refined, equipment installed and commissioned, automation made consistent, and quality designed into production rather than inspected in at the end. Hundreds of decisions have to work together, and some things can only be learned once the equipment is running.

The videos from Changzhou have tried to capture that reality. Henning has been filming from the factory floor as the line develops, often with engineers working behind him and equipment still being installed. The result is a less polished view of the factory, but a more useful one for customers and partners who want to understand what is actually happening.

Manufacturing matters

Our fourth-generation Aqueous Metal Cell (AMC) has been designed around characteristics that matter for energy infrastructure, including inherent stability, endurance, frequent cycling, operational simplicity and manufacturability.

Delivering those characteristics consistently requires manufacturing discipline. The High Volume Manufacturing Line is where a great deal of our engineering work starts becoming repeatable industrial production, with the equipment, processes, automation, quality controls and people behind the line all contributing to what eventually reaches a customer.

What you’ll see over the next month

As we get closer to opening, we will spend more time inside the factory. We will introduce more of the people building and operating the line, explain parts of the manufacturing process and follow the Aqueous Metal Cell through production. We will also share some of what the team has learned getting to this point.

There is an important distinction between opening a manufacturing line and demonstrating industrial scale. The latter comes through running equipment, producing consistently and delivering to customers. Opening the line gives us the capability to do that, with the evidence building through operation and delivery.

Less than a month to go

Opening the High Volume Manufacturing Line will be a significant moment for EnerVenue and for the teams who have spent months getting it ready. There will still be plenty to do the morning after it opens, as the team continues learning, processes improve and production generates the operating evidence that customers expect from us.

We plan to keep the cameras around for that part too. Customers considering energy infrastructure designed to endure for decades should be able to see the engineering, manufacturing and operational work behind it, not only the finished product.
